Close to the German-Austrian frontier, near Mittenwald / Scharnitz, Signalbau Huber put the first traffic security system for avalanche-threatened roads into operation. The event-triggered construction protects a 300m road section.
Kinetic snow activities are permanently controlled by a geophone which is installed in an altitude of 1600 metres. In case of an avalanche, the geophone informs the control station in the valley via radio signals. This information is handled by two traffic signals, which immediately turn into red for the road-users at the foot of the danger zone. Depending on the snow condition, between 30 and 40 seconds remain to leave the endangered area. After seven minutes, the traffic security system unblocks the 300 metre sector and switches to “amber-flashing signal” for another 25 minutes.
In the past, avalanche-threatened sections needed to be blocked for traffic preventatively, sometimes lasting for weeks. Now, the event-driven security system of Signalbau Huber will keep the traffic running significantly longer.
